Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur

Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur traces its origins to 1856, when it was established as the Civil Engineering College, Calcutta — making it one of the oldest engineering institutions in Asia. After operating for decades as Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU), it was converted in 2014 into India's first IIEST, a distinct category of Institute of National Importance with funding and admission structures modeled closely on the IIT system.

Located in Shibpur, Howrah, directly across the Hooghly river from Kolkata, IIEST combines a rare depth of institutional history with modern IIT-equivalent status, running programmes across Computer Science, Electronics, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and several other engineering and architecture disciplines.
