Indian Institute of Technology Mandi

Indian Institute of Technology Mandi was established in 2009 in Himachal Pradesh as part of the second wave of new IITs. Its permanent campus, spread across the hills around Kamand village near Mandi town, is built as a series of interconnected zones rather than one flat quadrangle — a deliberate design that has shaped a hiking, outdoors-oriented campus culture unusual among Indian engineering institutes.

The institute runs B.Tech programmes in Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering, plus a distinctive interdisciplinary B.Tech in Data Science and Engineering. IIT Mandi is also known for its Catalysis and Sensing for Health (CASH) research cluster and for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, which gives undergraduates broader elective options than most engineering-only institutes.

The campus sits roughly 15 km from Mandi town in Himachal Pradesh, at an elevation that gives it a cooler climate than plains-based IITs. Facilities are distributed across the North Campus (academic blocks, library) and South Campus (some hostels and research centres), connected by a campus shuttle service. The setting is remote relative to Delhi or Bombay, which is both a draw (quiet, scenic, low-distraction) and an adjustment for students used to urban campuses.
